Lost Island Theme Park: The Ultimate Family Guide to Waterloo’s Theme Park
If you have been to Lost Island Waterpark, you already know it has been one of Iowa’s favorite summer destinations for years. But did you know there’s also a theme park right next door?
Lost Island Theme Park in Waterloo, Iowa opened just a few years ago, bringing an entirely new adventure for Midwest families. With immersive themed lands, rides for every age, interactive experiences, and one of the cleanest parks we have visited, it is now a favorite family day trip from Central Iowa.
Whether you are traveling with toddlers, tweens, teens, or grandparents, here is everything you need to know before you go.
What Makes Lost Island Theme Park Different?
From the moment you walk through the gates, it feels like you have stepped into another world.
The inspiration behind Lost Island has always been to create a tropical oasis filled with adventure, exploration, thrilling attractions, and unforgettable family fun. Instead of one themed area, the park is divided into several beautifully designed realms, each with its own story, architecture, rides, music, and atmosphere.
As you explore, you will notice every detail has been thoughtfully planned from landscaping and themed buildings to interactive experiences that make you feel like you are part of the adventure.
It doesn’t feel like a typical amusement park. It feels like you are traveling through different worlds.
Download the Free Lost Island App Before You Go
One of our biggest tips? Download the free Lost Island Theme Park app before you arrive.
The app makes navigating the park incredibly easy by helping you:
- View an interactive park map
- Find rides by thrill level
- Locate restaurants, restrooms, and attractions
- Check ride information
- Explore each themed realm
It is one of the most useful theme park apps we have used and helps families maximize their day.
Family-Friendly Tips Before You Visit
A few things that made our visit even easier:
1. Pack Your Lunch
One of our favorite budget-friendly perks? You are welcome to leave the park and enjoy lunch in your vehicle. Since the parking lot is conveniently close to the entrance, it is easy to head out for a picnic before jumping back into the fun.
2. Bring Empty Water Bottles
You will find water refill stations throughout the park, making it easy to stay hydrated during a hot Iowa day.
3. Lockers Are Available
If you are planning to enjoy the splash areas (and trust me, you will want to!), lockers are available for storing towels, extra clothes, and other belongings.
4. Bring a Towel or Change of Clothes
There are two splash pad areas throughout the park that are perfect for cooling off. They are especially popular with younger kids, so packing a towel or extra outfit is well worth it.
Meet the Characters Throughout the Park
Do not be surprised when you suddenly run into one of the park’s characters while exploring.
Unlike many parks where characters simply wave for photos, the Lost Island characters stay in character, interact with guests, answer questions, and create memorable conversations for kids. It’s one of those details that adds so much magic to the experience.
Attractions for Every Age
One of the biggest surprises? Lost Island is not just for thrill seekers.
Yes, you will find exciting roller coasters and high-energy rides, but there are also plenty of attractions designed specifically for younger visitors. Families can easily spend an entire day exploring together without feeling like the park only caters to one age group.
Top 5 Things Little Kids Will Love at Lost Island Theme Park
Traveling with younger children? Here are our favorite experiences.

Without a doubt, Tamariki was one of our favorite areas. Filled with colorful buildings, whimsical details, gentle rides, and interactive play spaces, it is designed with younger adventurers in mind while still feeling immersive and exciting. It is a place where little imaginations can run wild.
2. Splash Pads
Need to cool off? The park features two splash pad areas where kids can run, play, and beat the summer heat. This is one reason we recommend packing extra clothes or a towel.

Inside the Air Realm, younger visitors will love exploring the interactive music and sensory play area. It is a wonderful place to slow down, explore, create sounds, and enjoy hands-on play between rides.
4. Fossil Dig Area
Kids who love dinosaurs or digging in the sand will have a blast uncovering “fossils” in the themed excavation area. It is a fun break from rides while still encouraging imaginative play.
5. Playground
The park also includes a couple of playgrounds where little ones can climb, slide, and burn off extra energy. Sometimes it is these simple experiences that become family favorites.
