History Alive: Votes for Women
The State Historical Society of Iowa offers a digital education package to teach the history of women’s suffrage in Iowa and the United States. The History Alive digital package includes a variety of educational materials and activities, including live, recorded programs and primary sources only available through the State Historical Society of Iowa. The activities are flexible for in-person, virtual, or hybrid instruction.
Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame
Not enough people are aware of the extent of women’s contributions to society, whether past or present. To highlight women’s heritage and recognize their contributions, the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women (ICSW) established the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame in 1975. Each year the ICSW and the Governor welcome four women into the Hall of Fame, paying tribute to them and setting them forth as role models for others. Spend some time learning about women who have contributed to Iowa’s history.
Plaza of Heroines at the Iowa State University
The Plaza of Heroines is a mosaic of bricks and granite pavers that forms the entryway to Carrie Chapman Catt Hall on Iowa State’s central campus. The center of the plaza features a large granite paving stone honoring Carrie Chapman Catt, a distinguished alumna of Iowa State’s class of 1880, leader of the U.S. women’s suffrage movement, crusader for international peace, and an advocate for the expansion of women’s rights throughout the world. Surrounding that stone are smaller granite pavers and bricks that honor more than 3,900 women who have made an impact on individuals, families, communities, and society.

Located in Downtown Des Moines is the Iowa Women of Achievement Bridge. This bridge links the east and west sides of Des Moines at the northern edge of the Principal Riverwalk loop. The bridge features two separate pathways – one for walkers or joggers and one for bicyclists. The bridge is lit by colorful lights that reflect onto the water and truly make it a beautiful site to see in Des Moines. Take a walk across the bridge and think about a woman in history who has made an impact on your life.
