Earth Day in Des Moines 2026

There are a lot of opportunities for kids and families to get involved in Earth Day in Des Moines in the month of April. You can do something as simple as grabbing trash bags and adventuring on a walk in your neighborhood or local park to pick up trash or plant a tree. Earth Day at the Botanical Garden

Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden

Explore the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden for Earth Day for free! Explore education stations and see how to make upcycled garden containers. Then learn about the elements Earth, Fire, Water, and Air and find all of the hidden waterdrops throughout the garden. 

Meet the X-Vengers superhero team from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM. New this year: Meet watercolor artist Sara Burrier and tour her exhibition Nymphs of Nature in the Evergreen Gallery. Sara will be live painting and have additional works of art on display from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM. Don’t forget to stop by Flora Cafe to purchase drinks and food. 

Earth Day Story Hour

Wednesday, April 22 from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

Raccoon River Nature Lodge

Join the West Des Moines Parks & Recreation for a fun and educational Earth Day Story Time. Enjoy an interactive puppet show, sing along to earth-themed songs, and take part in hands-on activities that teach the importance of recycling and caring for our planet. Each child will also get to decorate their own crayon pouch to take home as a special keepsake!

Paws & Pints

Celebrate Earth Day at Paws & Pints with our friends from Hive & Petal!

Join Paw & Pints for a fun, hands-on evening featuring pollinator seed ball making led by Catherine from Hive & Petal. For just $5, you can create your own seed balls to take home while learning about the importance of prairies and pollinators in our community.They will also have beautiful floral bouquets available for purchase, plus the chance to decorate your own planter pot to grow flowers or herbs at home.

It’s the perfect way to celebrate the planet, with plants, pups, and a little creativity.
