Take time to stroll the sidewalks, browse local shops, and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere that makes Jefferson a destination worth exploring.
Snap a Photo at Arch Alley

One of the coolest hidden gems in Jefferson is Arch Alley. This creative public art installation features repurposed metal, architectural beams, and industrial materials transformed into a unique gathering space. The alley features three striking archways that symbolize the different pathways that have shaped Jefferson and Greene County. The arch was created by artist David Williamson and the project incorporates ideas from local students as well as elements that celebrate the area’s history and industry.
Take a moment to read the community poem, relax on one of the benches, and snap a photo beneath the arches. If you are visiting in the evening, don’t miss the beautiful lighting that brings the artwork to life after dark.
Wander Through Imagination Alley

Imagination Alley is a colorful public art space that showcases the creativity and community spirit of Jefferson. It was created as part of downtown revitalization efforts, the alley features murals, sculptures, metal artwork, and interactive elements designed to inspire visitors of all ages.
Kids will love the “Choose Your Own Adventure” board, while families can explore the artwork and augmented reality experiences created with the help of local artists and students. It is a fun and unique stop that highlights the imagination behind this vibrant small-town community.
Visit the Mahanay Bell Tower and Hear the Carillon Bells

No visit to Jefferson is complete without seeing the iconic Mahanay Bell Tower, one of the community’s most recognizable landmarks. Visitors can ride the elevator to the top for incredible views of the community. Admission is free for children ages 18 and under, while adults can visit for just $5.
The Bell Tower offers more than just a view. Families can participate in a kid-friendly scavenger hunt while exploring the tower, making the experience both educational and fun. All ages will have fun looking for the fun rooftop art including a new 3D art installation.
Throughout the day, music fills the downtown square as the bells play regularly. During the summer months, visitors can also enjoy the Wednesday Tower Tunes Live concerts are over lunch time from 12:15 to 12:30 p.m. featuring live concerts from the Bell Tower.
Discover the Thomas Jefferson Gardens

The Thomas Jefferson Gardens are a beautiful example of what makes this community special. As you explore, you will find:

Step Inside the World’s Largest Collection of Barbies

See the World’s Strongest Furniture

Step back in time at RVP~1875 Historic Furniture Shop & Museum, one of Jefferson’s most unique attractions. Located in a historic downtown building, owner Robby Pedersen showcases historically accurate furniture made using the same tools and techniques that would have been used in Iowa in 1875.
Visitors can explore an impressive collection of 19th-century woodworking tools, handcrafted furniture, and fascinating Iowa history. For an even more memorable experience, sign up for a tour or workshop. Our family loved creating our own wooden toolbox and learning traditional woodworking skills firsthand. It is a one-of-a-kind stop that’s fun for both kids and adults.
Tour Midwest Mission

Looking for a meaningful stop during your visit? Take a tour of Midwest Mission and learn how this incredible organization is making an impact around the world. Through donated supplies, volunteer efforts, and partnerships with trusted nonprofits, Midwest Mission helps provide essential items to people facing crisis and disaster.

Centennial Cafe
Address: 100 E State Street in Jefferson
The Centennial Cafe is located inside a beautifully restored historic building and combines contemporary flavors with small-town charm. The restaurant features a rotating, handcrafted seasonal lunch menu and has quickly become a favorite downtown gathering spot.
The building itself dates back to 1876 and has been part of Jefferson’s story for nearly 150 years. After being lowered to street level by hand in 1928 and having its windows covered in the 1960s, a recent restoration brought the original windows back to life in 2022. Today, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a delicious meal while experiencing a piece of Jefferson’s history.
Greene Bean Coffee

Need a caffeine boost before exploring Jefferson? Stop by Greene Bean Coffee, located on the northwest corner of the downtown square.
